Effective Parenting

Hello Everyone,

There is one rule to parenting that is timeless and pays dividends for years to come...and that is to follow through.
As Parents we need to give children two options:
Option #1:
Do this and  (blank) will happen
Option #2
Don't do this and (blank) will happen
Next, we allow the child choose.
Here is where the magic happens, we follow through with the consequence of the choice that the child choose...good or bad...
Example:
Option #1
If you fold the towels before I get home tonight...you may go and play after I come home.
Option #2
If you choose not to fold the towels before I get home, then when I come home you cannot go play and you will also have to sweep all the floors.

Follow through:
Option #1
When I get home if the towels were folded then the child gets to go play end of story. There is no more adding chores or making the child earn the privilege, the child just gets the consequence of his or her choice (in this case, gets to go play).
Option #2
When I get home if the towels were not folded, I do not get upset or emotional, I just let the child know that they need to sweep and that they cannot play. I do not deviate from the options, my job as a parent is to allow my child to make a choice and I just follow through with the consequence that the child chose.
Take care this week and remember to follow through with what you told your child/children what would happen. Being consistent with your follow through will help you to raise responsible confident children.

*We recommend love and logic for a practical approach to parenting.

Stability

Hey Everyone!
There are many aspects to stability. Some aspects include; exercise, housing, drinking enough water, paying bills as well as obtaining and maintaining employment. Use the bullet points below as a form of reference.
1. Exercise
The average amount and time for exercise is 30 minutes at east 3 times per week. Be sure you are moving for the thirty minutes, ride a bike, take a walk, do yoga, run etc. If you have limitations such as disabilities you can do a google search for more ideas with exercising.
2. Housing
Most financial experts agree that your housing costs need to below 35% of your overall income. Take your income and multiply it by .35, that total then becomes a goal for housing costs to not be exceeded. If your housing costs are greater than 35% of your income then your housing costs may be interfering with your stability.
3. Water
Drinking enough water is crucial for our brains to function. When we do not drink enough water, it makes it difficult to think, problem solve and our over all stability is compromised. *Be sure to check with your Dr. when changing any dietary patterns.
4. Pay Your Bills
Paying bills (especially  on time) is crucial to obtaining and maintaining stability. It is crucial to create a budget and make a plan for how and when you will pay your bills. There are multiple ideas on how set and maintain a budget. Find a budget that works for you and dedicate yourself to following it. Writing down all of your bills along with the due date is a great place to start.
5. Get and Keep a  Job (if you don't already have one)
Having a job (or another form of income) is also an aspect of stability. If you currently do not have a job and would like to have one, check out your local department of workforce services. This can be a great resource for getting a job. Also, create a resume if you do not have one. Having a resume is a quick way to apply for jobs and helps you to look more serious about obtaining employment when job seeking. You can find free templates online or through Word Docs. If you are thinking of changing jobs, DO NOT QUIT your job until you have secured a new one. ALWAYS try your best to give two weeks notice at your current job. It is always best to avoid leaving on bad terms or to not burn bridges when possible (and most times it is possible).
Taking a look at each of these areas will help you to both obtain and maintain stability. Thanks for reading and have a great week!

Hello Everyone,

Finding your balance can be difficult. When we are off balance it tends to interfere with our ability to process information and find motivation. When we feel balanced we can feel energized to accomplish tasks and feel less stressed.
This week try these 3 things to get you on your way to finding balance.
1. Go outside, even if it's just to drink your morning coffee or to stand there for 5 to 10 minutes. Going outside and being in nature helps to ease anxiety and depression.
2. Find something to read. Reading helps us to grow, both through learning and by helping us to grow in creativity.  Try reading for at least 20 minutes each day.
3. Be sure that you are drinking water and eating fresh fruits and veggetables. The closer we eat fruits and vegetables in their natural state (raw) the more nutrients we gain. Our brain and body operate on nutrients. We need these for a balanced mood and for energy.

Following these three easy ideas can move us towards a more balanced life. Remeber this is just the beginning. We all have to start somewhere! Take care, and it is my hope that you find your balance!
*Please be sure to consult your doctor before making any dietary changes

Hello Everyone,
It can be very difficult to get moving some days. Here are three things to try if you are feeling unmotivated.
1. Make yourself a glass of ice water with lemon.
2. Make a to-do list, and start with the simplest task first, it feels good to check something off of a list...It gets us motivated!
3. Clean a room in your house. Having a clean space helps us to think and it frees us to do more.
Try some of these tricks and see if they help you to get motived as well! Take care everyone, and get motivated!

Overcoming Despair

Hello Everyone,
Overcoming despair is a process. Despair can be a patient enemy that will take over our lives if we are not mindful. Despair is heavy and has a tendency to push against us and cause us to slide backwards. To stand up against despair, we need to take action. We have to come to a point were we say "no more!" Taking action against despair looks differently for everyone in every situation. If you are in despair, take action, decide what that action is for you. Sometimes it's nothing more than a phone call, putting on your walking shoes or getting out of bed and taking a shower. Whatever your situation is, TAKE ACTION and reclaim your life! Have a great week everyone!
